St Patrick’s Day 2025, Shamrock Shakes, Cabbage and Corn Beef
It’s Greg Asimakoupoulos on this 17th day of March, St Patrick’s Day, and here I am at the Poetry with a new installment that says Shamrock Shakes to celebrate with cabbage and corn beef. Well, there you have it the long-for green milkshake from McDonald’s along with what is the traditional fair for St Patrick’s Day.
If you’re Irish that’s a given right? You have corn beef and cabbage and whether or not you have it just one day a year or routinely something that my Irish family and friends look forward to. Yes in fact I am a wee bit Irish my grandmother on my dad’s side. The Virginian who married the Greek immigrant Margaret Turley was English and Irish so I inherited a little bit of my grandma Margaret’s Irish blood and so I enjoy corn beef and cabbage on St Patrick’s Day. I’m still kind of developing a taste for a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake, not my favorite but one day a year it’s okay.
It got me thinking though when we think of symbolic food or food that is designated for a special occasion in the Life of Christ followers. We have a traditional meal, don’t we? It’s not celebrated once a year in many churches, it’s once every 3 months, quarterly, and in a lot of churches like the church in which I have been a pastor for the last 46 years. It would be every month we would celebrate the Lord’s Supper and my friends who are Roman Catholic.
