A Wonderful World-Daily Meditation August 19, 2022

Today’s quotation:

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure.  There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.-Jawaharlal Nehru

Today’s Meditation:

If we live in such a wonderful world, then why don’t we always see it as such?  Is it the world’s doing when we see it as being cruel or harsh, or is it our own doing?  The fact is that the world is indeed full of beauty, charm, and adventure, but sometimes we get so used to seeing things in certain ways that we forget how to see the wonder.  Children are very good at seeing the charm and the wonder, but we adults seem to have lost our ability to see the wonderful world around us, except through our learned filters of judgment and criticism.

I love to watch little kids look at the world.  They seem to see so much more than we adults do, and they really seem to SEE things, recognizing the wonder and potential in a puppy, a tree, another person, or a mud puddle.

Sometimes I think that we get so caught up in keeping our clothes clean that we forget that much of the adventure that we can find in the world requires us to get a little dirty–or even a lot dirty!  Sometimes we have to stop doing things that are comfortable to us in order to step out of ourselves and take a risk.

There really is no end to the potential that this world has for us–it’s marvelous, though completely underused planet.  And the people who use it the most, unfortunately, seem to want to use it for profit rather than for adventure.  Perhaps if more of us sought the adventure that this world offers us, we can restore some of the balance in our lives, the balance between being grounded and dreaming.  And we can restore some of the balance to a neglected planet, the balance between being used in healthy and fulfilling ways and being used for profit.  It’s an amazing world here–and it’s ours!  Shouldn’t that be enough?

Questions to consider:

Do you usually see the wonderful world or the normal everyday world?

What causes us to stop seeing the beauty, wonder, and potential of the world in which we live?

When was the last time you went on a great adventure?

For further thought:

I see trees of green, and red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.-George Weiss / Bob Thiele
