Even if it’s a Little Thing- Daily Meditation 9.22.23
Today’s quotation:
Even if it’s a little thing, do something for those who have need of help, something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.-Albert Schweitzer
Today’s Meditation:
It’s such a good feeling when you’ve helped someone else out just for the sake of helping them. It makes me feel like I’ve made a little contribution to life like I’ve contributed to the well-being and positive energy of the world rather than just taking from it. I like Albert’s use of the word “privilege,” for it accurately describes that we’re here on this planet where we can help others who can use our help and receive a very positive feeling.
Many people feel that others need to “deserve” our help or that the people who need help have somehow done something wrong to deserve their current situation. We like to judge others and have them come up short in our judgment, for then we can decline to help in any way because we’ve somehow judged them unworthy of our help. But how many people are just one helping hand away from turning things around completely, from improving their lot dramatically? Unfortunately, if that helping hand never comes, no one will ever see that improvement.
Let’s help others, for goodness’ sake! It’s usually pretty easy to do and doesn’t cost us much time or effort, and the results can be excellent. We must be careful of people taking advantage of our willingness to help, and we can’t over-commit ourselves. Still, we can make minor differences in many people’s lives.
Helping others contributes to life, giving something to the world without condition or expectation of return. It’s up to us to decide if we will be people who help others or not, and I sincerely hope that you choose to be one for the sake of others and your benefit.
Questions to consider:
What are some small ways that you can help others today?
Why do so many people refuse to help others regularly?
What are some of the benefits you’ve experienced when you’ve helped others?
For further thought:
We can never untangle all the woes in other people’s lives. We can’t produce miracles overnight. But we can bring a cup of cool water to a thirsty soul, or a scoop of laughter to a lonely heart.-Barbara Johnson
