The First Monday of the Month-My Rhymes and Reasons 10.7.24
The First Monday of the Month with Greg
It’s the first Monday of the month, the 7th of October, and the church is empty. This isn’t a church. This is the main stage on the cruise ship that Wendy and I recently cruised to Alaska with friends. Here’s where we gathered for our evening entertainment.
Still, it resembles the auditoriums of churches and larger churches in communities like Seattle and elsewhere, where hundreds gather on Sundays to worship the Living God. This is quite a contrast from the European cathedrals we visited earlier this year. Those cathedrals with wooden pews and carved statuary ornate pulpits remind me of Willow Creek Church’s appearance in the early 1980s. When I was a student in seminary completing my master of divinity degree, we visited Willow Creek.
Phase one is one of the first mega-churches in America, but like most churches, Monday morning finds the seats empty, and that would be true of today in your church, where I attend most Sundays empty seats because Monday finds us in our work routines going about our busy lives the way that we engage life on most days not in church but interacting with work.
