Greg Asimakoupoulos with today’s edition of My Rhymes and Reasons from the harbor in Amsterdam. As this ocean going vessel enters the harbor preparing to dock on this beautiful morning.
From what I’ve been told, not always the case here in Amsterdam. Where the weather can be quite iffy. Often, not today waiting for this ship to come in, I’ve been contemplating the origin of that expression, and we learned about that on our river cruise through Europe this past week.
‘Waiting for your ship to come in’, that was an expression used back in the old colonization days, when vessels from the Netherlands would make their way to Indonesia and points east. It was only one in three vessels that would return home. Others would be pirated or capsized and so families back in the Netherlands would wait for papa, uncle, and/or grandfather to come back.
Imagine only one in three ships returning. They waited for their ship to come in even as I’m waiting for the Norwegian Prima to make its way to port. An illustration for me today of that marvelous passage of scripture perhaps, it was a memory verse for you in confirmation class or Sunday school.
Hebrews 11, Verse 1: Now faith is the confidence of things hoped for, the evidence of things not yet seen, faith is the confidence that your ship will come in that God is piloting that vessel in your life bringing about that which He has promised that which you are counting on.
