Glacier Bay National Park – SE AK-My Rhymes and Reasons 9.26
It’s a Thursday, Greg, with today’s edition of My Rhymes and Reasons again greeting you from Glacier Bay National Park in Southeast Alaska, and this is truly a glorious day. The weather cooperated here on the Euro Dam cameras are focused at the John Hopkins Glacier. It’s rare for cruise ships to get this close to this particular Glacier, but we have that unique opportunity because of traveling this late into the season.
I want to talk to you about Glacier Bay National Park. It is 60 M long and 10 Mi wide at its widest point. As I scan the coastline, I see it opens into this Inlet that bends to the right and continues for 60 miles. It is amazing, but let me tell you this: 250 years ago, Glacier Bay was an ice field. You might notice small animals floating about like sealers or even tiny harbor seals in the water.
This is Huna Glacier, which I’m focusing on right now. In the background, the narrator comments on the water and the glacial ice floating in the bay. Let’s listen to her as she continues her commentary as we approach closer to what we refer to as Bergie bits. You can hear more about it in the video above.
