Have You Read Psalm 91 Recently?

It’s Greg Asimakoupoulos with today’s edition of My Rhymes and Reasons.

Have you read Psalm 91 recently? It’s the sheltering psalm. I think of that Psalm when I think of my dad’s mom, my grandma Smith. Yeah. Her name was Smith, even though she married a Greek immigrant by the name of Heramus Athanasius Asimakoupoulos.

He took on an American name. Heramus became Harry. Harry Smith married Margaret Turley. They raised six kids in the panhandle of Idaho. The two boys, they had six kids, two sons and four daughters. The two boys went off to war during World War II, both in the United States Marine Corps. They saw combat in the South Pacific and my dear grandmother praying for her young boys, 19 year-old and a 22year-old.

Rarely did she get letters. Prone to worry, filled with fear, she fell to her knees every night and prayed Psalm 91.

The sheltering psalm where God likens himself to a bird whose wings of protection cover us.
