Love Is a Precious Plant | Daily Meditation-February 21, 2022

Today’s Quotation:

We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself.  You’ve got to keep on watering it.  You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.

John Lennon

Today’s Meditation:

What do you do with your love?  It’s an interesting question, isn’t it?  And it’s not a question that most of us think about.  If I’m a good singer, I might ask myself how I use my gift, how I develop it.  If I’m a gifted athlete, I can always ask myself whether or not I’m using that gift to its full potential.  But love isn’t like talent–talent is distributed almost randomly, and different individuals are blessed with different talents.  Love, though, is a gift given to all, and how we develop it as a part of ourselves is up to us.

I don’t always show love.  Sometimes I get annoyed with other people or even afraid of them, and that keeps me from showing the love that’s in me.  Sometimes other factors in my life might bring me down, and it’s difficult to nurture and show love when I’m down.

If I do take care of my love, though, it can grow in strength and shine through even when I’m down and out.  No matter how another person treats me, I can still treat them with love if I keep on watering my love and helping it to grow strong and true.

If someone loves me, I have to accept that love and nurture it and help it to grow.  The love I share, likewise, needs help to grow–it just won’t happen.  Love is a beautiful gift, and if we just leave it in the cupboard where it never will see light or feel water, then we squander the gift.  And I don’t want to do that.

Questions to ponder:

1. Is your love out in the light being nurtured, or stored in a box somewhere deep in a closet?  If the latter, is it safe there, or lonely?

2. Why do we say that “love is a verb?”  How does that concept relate to what John Lennon has said?

3. How can we separate our ideas of true love from our ideas of romantic–or even sexual–love?

For further thought:

Love is not just another attitude. . . . Love is actually what we are. It is a step beyond attitude.  It is a shift in consciousness.
