My Rhymes and Reasons from First Hill on Mercer Island
And it’s Greg Asimakoupoulos with Wednesday’s edition of My Rhymes and Reasons from First Hill on Mercer Island. There you can see a sign indicating an on-ramp to Interstate 90.
There in the distance you are looking at Interstate 90 across Lake Washington. It is the Mercer Island floating bridge.
In the beginning, 85 years ago, in July of 1940, the very first floating bridge was constructed, connecting downtown Seattle with what previously had been an isolated island accessible only by little boats, mosquito fleet, small foot fairy, and sometimes carrying cars.
Well, that all changed in 1940 when Mercer Island was connected to the rest of the world. In the beginning, there was just one span. Now, there, as you can see, are several. Mercer Island floating bridge.
It’s quite a feat. It’s about a mile and 2/10 across and it’s one of my favorite places to walk.
