Saul Price and The History of How Costco Was Named

Today My Rhymes and Reasons is going to be partly about Saul Price.

Greg Asimakoupoulos with today’s edition of My Rhymes and Reasons from the corporate headquarters of Costco. You know, right across the street is our Aqua warehouse and here on this side of the street are the corporate offices where a worldwide operation is maintained. One of the most successful enterprises of all time.

One of those Seattle based companies like Microsoft, Starbucks, Nordstrom, REI, Eddie Bower, Boeing, and the list goes on. Costco is probably near the top. It’s a membership club with a simple concept. People buy a membership for a fairly modest amount each year and it gives them the privilege of getting discounted prices on food stuffs, clothing, tires, cars, and travel.

Amazing. It all started in San Diego a few decades ago by a man by the name of Saul Price. He started the concept with a company named after him. I always thought it was because it was Price related. He called it Price Club. No. Saul Price named his membership club after his family name, Price Club.

Price Club then became Costco, headquartered here in the greater Seattle area.
