Who Are You?| Daily Meditation-November 1, 2021

Today’s Quotation:

Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, “This is the real me,” and when you have found that attitude, follow it.

William James

Today’s Meditation:

Who are you?  This is one of the most important questions that we can ask ourselves, yet one that we don’t explore very often with the kind of depth and attention that we give other issues in our lives.  We may be willing to spend hours researching the best prices for hotels or airfare, or we may spend years researching our family trees, but how often do we look in that ever-important mirror and ask ourselves, “Who am I?”, fully expecting a satisfactory answer?

Many people define who they are based on outer things such as clothing or possessions or even spouses.  Others define who they are by their hobbies or their professions.  None of these aspects of our lives, though, comes anywhere close to answering the fundamental question of who we are as human beings, truly unique individuals who are here on this planet for a relatively short while to make lives for ourselves as best as we can.

What is “that particular mental attribute” for you?  Is it compassion?  Gratitude?  Creativity?  It may even be working with numbers or working with words, or sharing information and ideas as a teacher.  Who knows?  In your heart, you know, and that’s where that voice will come from that will tell you, “This is who I am.”  And perhaps three years from now that voice will tell you something different, but three years from now truly doesn’t matter–what is that voice telling you right here, right now?

Unless you listen for it, you’ll never know, and unless you trust it when you hear it, you’ll never know whether it was right or not.

Questions to ponder:

1.  What are some of the possible “real you’s”?

2.  How often do you truly stop and truly listen for that voice from inside?

3.  Why might we not trust that voice when we do hear it?  How does our fear affect us in such situations?

For further thought:

I shall try to remember all this day that I am a divine creation with infinite possibilities.
