Wondering if You’ve Ever Seen a Dead Cactus?

Hey, it’s Greg Asimakoupoulos. Still at Pinnacle Peak Park in Scottsdale, Arizona. Wondering if you’ve ever seen a dead cactus. Well, you’re looking at it right here. Not. We’re not in Death Valley, but I’m sure in Death Valley, California. There would be examples of dead or dying cactus, Saguaro cactus that have given up the ghost.

On this windy autumn afternoon, I was struck by well, yes, the beauty as well as the artistry in that which has lived its life and now has surrendered its life. Maybe because this has been a year of losing people I love.

In the last month, I have watched two people that have been deeply impacted in my life walk through the doorway of death.

My friend and mentor John Huffman, who became part of my life in 1973 in the fall quarter.

John, a young Presbyterian pastor, having recently moved to Pittsburgh to assume the pulpit of the First Presbyterian church in Pittsburgh, having just left his church in Florida where he was President Nixon’s pastor. (You can continue at 1:28 on the video above).

If you missed our last My Rhymes and Reasons post, it is here.
