You Rarely Have Time-Daily Meditation-June 2, 2023

Today’s quotation:

You rarely have time for everything you want, so you must make choices.  And hopefully, your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.-Fred Rogers
The World According to Mr. Rogers

Today’s Meditation:

Sometimes, choices can be a nightmare.  Sometimes all of our possible choices are wonderful, and sometimes all are awful.  But one thing I’ve found in life is that I can live with my choices very well when they come from my heart–when I know that I make them because of what I honestly feel to be the right thing to do, no matter the circumstances.  Any time I make a choice, a mistake is possible–and that possibility is often what makes them so difficult–but even when I do make a mistake, I’m fine with it if I chose due to listening to my heart rather than listening to the voice that’s out for selfish gain or expediency or that’s out to harm someone else or get revenge.

My choices must be about who I am as a human being rather than who I want others to think I am.  When I choose one job over another, I hope I’m choosing it because of the contribution I can make rather than because of personal gain.  I know that it’s important to make enough money not just to live on but to take vacations and to supply my needs and the needs of others, but that can’t be my only criteria for choosing.

We all face choices every day, from the foods we eat to the things we say to the things we buy and the friends we spend time with.  It can be beneficial to come up with a strategy that we can follow for making them, and the first part of that strategy should be to ask ourselves, what’s the right thing to do here?  If the answer is fuzzy, we should move on to other determiners, but if I find a wallet filled with cash and a driver’s license, it’s pretty obvious what the right thing to do is.  If I find $500 on the street with no identification, I need to consider other choices, always with an eye to what’s right and what our heart tells us to be the best decision.

Where to eat, what career to pursue, which socks to wear, where to live, which brand of toothpaste to buy, whether or not to marry a particular person–our lives are full of choices.  We must approach those choices with some idea of how we’re going to make them, but also with the knowledge that we innately have a good idea of which choice is the best one–which choice will have the most positive effects in our lives and the lives of the people we love.

Questions to consider:

Why do so many people find themselves paralyzed when it comes to making choices?  Where does the anxiety come from?

How often does one choice happen to be just about as good as another?  Can we flip a coin, then?

How have your choices in the past affected your current life?  How will your future look based on today’s choices?

For further thought:

We must wake up to feed our internal flames and make each choice conscious.  A conscious choice reflects our highest commitments and directly aligns with our vision for our lives.  When we make conscious choices, we consider the effect our actions will have on our lives as a whole.  We take the time to reflect on where our choices will lead us and their impact on our future.-Debbie Ford
